Janine: tips from someone who should have known better.

October 28, 2011

1. Always have several sheets of toilet paper handy in your purse/shoulder bag.
2. Tea drinking desperadoes supply your own variety. Some countries don’t understand that some of us don’t drink COFFEE!!
3.Don’t assume when you sit down for a much researched and awaited dining experience that you will eat that magnificent meal. Check the design of the chairs. You may find yourself ordering food from the adjoining restaurant!!
4.When organising your accommodation be aware, a squiggle on a map may not be just a few kms out of town. It may in fact be 120kms out of town!
5.Always break up a trip. Now too old for 24+ hours flying and airport lounges!
6.Medication. Bring the works. Just because you haven’t had a sinus infection for ages don’t assume you are now ok. Saved by a landlady in a farm house in Villaviciosa who gave me the left over antibiotics from her daughter’s ear infection. Disgusting isn’t it, but you’ll do anything when desperate.
7.Language. Did I say that? When ordering a milk coffee for Alex and a tea with cold milk for me in my best Spanish, I received an expresso with milk and a black coffee with a glass full of ice blocks.
8.And finally allow plenty of time for your in flight movie to end. So hard to be captured by a nail biting scene and then for the head phones to be collected. Lip reading is not nearly as exciting.
Hope the above assists in your travel plans.
My most important tip is take with you plenty of patience and a good sense of humour.
BON VOYAGE.
