Heading somewhere about which we know very little – Cyprus.

September 26, 2013

imageimageimageimageimageWhat do we know about Cyprus? Less about the place itself and probably more about its links with a couple of Melbourne personalities. AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou is apparently a Cypriot. Ex political advisor and now journalist, Niki Savva, has written a book (So Greek – Confessions of a Conservative Leftie) which not only gives a behind the scenes view of current politics, but also reveals her travel to Cyprus to retrace her family’s origins.
What we also knew about Cyprus was from TV news the day the government stopped all withdrawals from bank accounts and ATMs and the EU insisted on immediate austerity measures.
But here we are, day two in Nicosia and we are learning about the Greek Cypriots’ blood-spilling struggles for independence from British rule, 1955-1959. The other struggle is one with the Turkish northern half of the island, symbolised by two immigration checkpoints separated by a UN monitored no man’s land of about 200 metres.
Our first impressions as we walk around the place are that things are mellowing. we’ll know more in a couple of weeks.
